What is RSS?

[top]

Feeds are also known as RSS. There is some discussion as to what RSS stands for, but most people plump for “Really Simple Syndication”. RSS is an XML-based format for sharing and distributing Web content, such as news headlines. Using an RSS reader, you can view data feeds from various news sources, such as MKP Chicago, including headlines, summaries, and links to full stories.

What is an RSS Reader?

  • Your browser might be an RSS Reader; it depends on what browser you have and what version it is. IE 7, Opera 9 and Firefox 2 all read RSS. Look for and click the orange icon in your browser’s toolbar.
  • Your email program may also be an RSS Reader, or even better, an RSS/News Aggregator. Once you subscribe to a feed, an aggregators (like Outlook 2007) continually check for new items from the feed just like it checks for new email items for your inbox.
  • Some services let you add RSS feeds to a web page. Yahoo! users can add RSS feeds to their My Yahoo! page. You can even click on this Add to My Yahoo! to do it!
  • There are also many standalone programs you can download and use.

What is a Weblog?

Another way many people use RSS feeds is by incorporating content into weblogs, or “blogs”. Blogs are web pages comprised of usually short, frequently updated items and web links. Blogging as a publishing tool is used for many purposes: traditional journalism, personal journals, group discussions around a topic, and many combinations in-between.
